Welcome to the REACT! Survey

A research project of the UCI Institute of Transportation Studies

Program Overview

Thank you very much for participating in the REACT! research project! The primary goal of this experiment is to evaluate the process of planning, scheduling, and executing household activities and travel over the course of a typical week. The demand for travel is derived from the need to participate in activities, therefore, a decision to travel can only be understood by considering the entire activity scheduling process. To examine this decision process, REACT!, a unique data collection procedure, is applied to obtain travel and activity information from program participants.

A Computer-Aided Self-administered Interview (CASI) program, REACT!, is used to collect activity schedules from program participants. Each REACT! application surveys a full week of activity scheduling behavior for each participant and other adults in their households. The data will depict participants' typical weekly activity programs. If you have one or more household vehicles, REACT! may be used in conjunction with a GPS tracking instrument, TRACER, installed in each of your vehicles. TRACER units integrate GPS capabilities with wireless communications so that vehicles can be tracked in real-time. While the tracking study is active continuously, the REACT! program is to be executed at regular, preferably daily, intervals. If your have TRACER equipped vehicles, REACT! will be able to display your daily trips to help you complete the REACT! diary.

The REACT! Survey

To participate in the program, it is necessary that you install the survey program, REACT!, in your computer (running Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me, or NT). However, we have made the installation process easy for you. After the survey is finished, you can completely remove the program from you computer. Installation is discussed below.

Only adult members of your household need to participate in the survey. The survey is divided into two parts:

Part I. The Initial Interview

The self-administered Initial Interview consists of a series of computer screens designed to collect basic household and personal information. The Initial Interview is completed prior to the start of the survey recording period. For the Ladera Ranch Project, this initial interview will be completed as part of the pre-move interview and survey. For households that continue with the Ladera Ranch Project, the Initial Interview will be reviewed and updated as necessary for each addition survey phase. In each case, this review and updating must be completed no later than the Sunday evening when the recording of Weekly Activity Diary begins. It is preferable that you complete the Initial Interview before this Sunday so the amount of time you spend on entering data each day can be minimized.

The initial interview can be expected to take 20-30 minutes with an additional 10 minutes for your spouse. You (or your spouse) must complete sections for each child in your household, taking about 10 minutes per child.

Part II. The Weekly Activity Diary

The recording of the Weekly Activity Diary begins on a Sunday evening and ends on the next Sunday evening. Each night of the survey period (preferably after 6:00 pm), each adult household member will log in the REACT! program. On the first Sunday evening, you will be prompted to indicate the activities you know you will be doing on each day of the coming week (from Monday morning until next Sunday evening). On Monday evening, you will be asked to update the activities and travel that you have actually completed throughout Monday, and then indicate if there are any changes to your current plans for the rest of the week. This process will be repeated each evening of the survey week.

If you have Internet connection, each day after you (and your spouse) finish data entry, you will transfer your REACT! data to us. There is no need to worry about the security of transferring data through the Internet -- before the data are sent to our server, they are compressed and encoded with passwords. Only the survey research team knows the password. If you do not have Internet connection, we will send a team member to collect the data from you computer when the survey is completed after the second Sunday evening.

We expect each participant to take about 15 to 20 minutes to enter that day's activity and travel data and to update plans for the remainder of the week. The household can withdraw from participation at any time during the survey period. The investigator may also withdraw participants at his professional discretion before the entire survey is completed.

REACT! Respondent Consent Form

You may review the Consent Form required by the University to see what tasks are required and what benefits or risks that you may expect from this study. You will need to sign a copy of this form before your household may participate in the Ladera Ranch Project.
