Irvine PA12 Project: Part I: Task 1

There are seventeen (17) Traffic Analysis Zones (TAZs) in the City of Irvine's Planning Area 12, an area defined by the SR-133 to the east, I-405 to the south, Woodbridge to the West, and the Santa Fe / Amtrak tracks to the north. There are eleven (11) external stations (four each to the west and the east, two to the north, and one to the south). Figure 1 provides a schematic of the current transportation network and the base TAZ zoning system.

Task 1. Complete 1998 Base Year Inventory

You will be provided with a base TransCAD file, PA12-98.MAP, which contains the basic GIS layers depicting the Traffic Analysis Zones, the coded transportation network, and activity system data. You need to complete the base inventory by first completing a site visit to selected zones and intersections in your group's survey area (traffic counts were completed at selected intersections in CEE 127 last quarter).

  1. Compile Intersection Geometries
  2. For each assigned intersection, draw an intersection schematic displaying lane geometry, traffic control devices (vehicular and pedestrian), appropriate signage (speed, turn prohibitions, etc.), locations of bus stops, etc. Also note location of all access drives or other network features on all approaches to the intersection (for one half the distance to the next selected intersection on each approach).

  3. Land Use Inventory
  4. Describe the land use in each TAZ. Although you will be provided with a detailed summary of the type and amount of land use, it is important to visit the site to understand the various features which are not identifiable through a data compilation. Note the type of land use, its location, and the approximate density (this summary will be somewhat subjective). Sketch the approximate land use distribution. For the eight zones on the perimeter of the area, only define the immediate land uses adjacent to the network links identified in Figure 1.

  5. Prepare a DRAFT Task 1 Report
  6. Prepare a DRAFT Task 1 Report documenting this work. Follow all Project Guidelines in the preparation of this report. Submit this report by April 24, 1998.
