  Quote of the Week:
"The road is always better than the inn."
Cervantes "Don Quixote" (1605)"
Course Rationale: Travel behavior, always viewed in theory as derived from the demand for activity participation, in practice has been modeled with trip-based rather than activity-based methods. Conventional trip-based models define the state-of-the-practice, and although they have been moderately successful in the aggregate, they have failed to perform in relevant policy tests on either the demand or supply side. In response activity-based and dynamic approaches have been developed and these emerging techniques define the state-of-the-art.
Course Description: This course focuses on the methodological underpinnings of activity-based travel demand modeling. The methodologies are presented within the context of a generalization of discrete choice modeling approaches, while emphasizing the distinctions that separate these two approaches and presenting appropriate mathematical and statistical tools to address these distinctions. Topics include: the nature of activity-trip linkages, representation of space-time paths and the role of space-time prisms, measurement issues associated with similarity and distinctness of activity patterns, mathematical representation of activity patterns and the role of constraints on travel behavior, estimation of activity-based models, and potential policy applications of the methods.
Preparation: Please review the entire course web site, and do so regularly. While portions of the site will go live throughout the quartere, the course overview, syllabus, and research topics are available to view as is the general organization of the site.
