UCI ITE Student Chapter
Summary of Annual Projects
The ITE project is an annual activity of the UCI Student Chapter of the
Institute of Transportation Engineers. We select a project in the fall,
complete the work in the winter, and prepare and present the results to the
local ITE professional chapter in the spring. The following projects have
been completed:
- 2008-2009 Annual Project
The project investigated the relationship between gas prices and VMT on selected
freeway sections in southern California. Results were presented to the Southern
California Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers on Mat 20th, 2009,
wit hthe chapter being awarded "Most Unique & Thought Provoking Award".
Prepared by the UCI ITE Student Chapter, May 2009 [Chris Long, President]

- 2007-2008 Annual Project
The project underway involves a traffic signal optimization study for the UCI
Main Campus. Report and Presentation will be made in May 2008 to the Southern
California Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
Prepared by the UCI ITE Student Chapter, May 2008 [Joshua McNeill, President]

- 2006-2007 Annual Project
The first project involved the field implementation of a survey to assess
user acceptability of the PTC concept. The
second project was a Traffic Impact Study for a commercial center in
Planning Area 6 in the City of Irvine. Report and Presentation to the
Southern California Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
Prepared by the UCI ITE Student Chapter, May 2007 [Neelam Sharma, President]

- 2005-2006 Annual Project
PTC, an advanced vehicle tracking and identification technology, creates a
realtime, distributed vehicle travel history database. A wireless connection
is established between a PTC vehicle and the roadside controller and a traffic
cookie (location + timestamp) is written to the on-board database. Continuous
tracking throughout the network generates a complete vehicle travel history.
As a first step in assessing potential user acceptance, a survey was designed
and a pre-test completed. Report and Presentation to the Southern California
Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Prepared by the UCI ITE
Student Chapter, May 2006 [J.Paul Townley, President]

- 2004-2005 Annual Project
There was no chapter annual project. There were transportation projects as
part of CEE 181A-B-C Senior Design Practicum, which again focused on the City
of Irvine's Planning Area 9A Design Projects.
- 2003-2004 Annual Project
There were two transportation projects as part of CEE 181A-B-C Senior Design
Practicum -- City of Irvine Planning Area 9A Design Projects. One was in the
area of geometric roadway and pavement design; the second was in the area of
traffic impact assessment. These projects were presented to the ITE Southern
California Section's Student Project Competition [Alicia Yang and Charlene
Hwang, presenters]
- 2002/2003 Annual Project
"Integration of TRACER and REACT!".
Chapter members participated in the integration of TRACER, an in-vehicle GPS-based
tracking system, with REACT!, a web-based household travel/activity survey. Beta
testing of the integrated software lead to modifications of both technologies.
Report and Presentation to the Southern California Section of the Institute of
Transportation Engineers. Prepared by the UCI Student Chapter, April 2003
[Arwa Aweiss, president]
- 2001/2002 Annual Project
Extending the ITE Project for 2000/2001, this year focuses on the coordination
of traffic signals on the Sand Canyon and Irvine Center Drive arterial network.
Once again, Synchro is used for the
analysis. GPS-based TRACER units were used in a floating car study to compare
actual speeds and travel times with simulated speeds and travel times.
Report and Presentation to the Southern California Section of the Institute of
Transportation Engineers. Prepared by the UCI Student Chapter, April 2002
[Socheata Chhouk, president]
- 2000/2001 Annual Project
"Signal Optimization on Sand Canyon Avenue"
Report and Presentation to the Southern California Section of the Institute of
Transportation Engineers. Prepared by the UCI Student Chapter, April 2001
[Larry Tay and Brian Smolke, Co-Presidents]
- 1999/2000 Annual Project
"The Composition of Peak-Hour Volumes:
Do Sub-Patterns Exist?", Report and Presentation to the Southern California
Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Prepared by the UCI
Student Chapter, April 2000 [Iris Lee and Jamie Lai, co-Presidents].
- 1998/1999 Annual Project
"Coordination of Traffic Signals at
Major Event Locations in the City of Anaheim", Report and Presentation to
the City of Anaheim and the Southern California Section of the Institute
of Transportation Engineers. Prepared by the UCI Student Chapter, April
