THE INSTITUTE OF TRANSPORTATION STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar in INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS (ITS). The anticipated starting date of the position is 4 May 2008; the initial appointment will be for twelve months, with the possibility of renewal pending the availability of funding for the position. COURTNEY ENDO AND JI YOUNG PARK AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER OF WOMEN'S TRANSPORTATION SEMINAR
- Courtney Endo and Ji Young Park were awarded a scholarship from the Orange County Chapter of Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS). The 2007/2008 scholarship recipients were announced on December 5th, 2007 during their Annual Scholarship and Awards Evening Program. All scholarship recipients are sponsored by the Chapter for the international scholarship competitions. Courtney and Ji Young join ITS's prestigious list of recipients. Past recipients include Mei-Ting Tsai, Shin-Ting (Cindy) Jeng, Laia Pages, and Seri Park.
ERIC SHEN ACCEPTS POSITION AS DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION PLANNING FOR THE PORT OF LONG BEACH
- Eric Shen, a transportation planning official for the city of Pasadena, has been hired by the Board of Harbor Commissioners as the Director of Transportation Planning for the Port of Long Beach. Eric earned his Masters in Civil Engineering at UCI in 1995.
DECHTER RECEIVES RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AWARD
- Computer science professor Rina Dechter has been awarded the 2007 Association for Constraint Programming Research Excellence award for her record of sustained high-quality research in the area of constraint processing. For more information, click here

KEN SMALL HONORED BY JOURNAL OF URBAN ECONOMICS SPECIAL ISSUE
- Kenneth Small, economics professor emeritus, is the subject of a special issue of the Journal of Urban Economics, which published a selection of essays in recognition of his contributions to urban and transportation economics. “Essays in Honor of Kenneth A. Small” includes a collection of papers presented at a February 2006 conference held in honor of Small’s retirement from UCI. To learn more click here
RAQUEL GIRVIN ACCEPTS PRESTIGIOUS POSITION WITH FAA
- Raquel Girvin, who finished her Transportation Science Ph.D. last fall, has taken a position as Manager of the Aircraft Noise Division at the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, D.C. A staff of 10 people will report to her. This position is closely related to Raquel's dissertation work, which developed a theoretical economic model of airport noise regulation, but it also draws on her engineering background.
KENNETH JOH AND YING JUN (JOE) CHOW HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO RECEIVE A 2007 DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP.
- The objective of the Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program (DDETFP) is to attract qualified students to the field of transportation and research, and advance transportation workforce development.
FACULTY ACHIEVEMENT, PROFESSOR KENNETH A. SMALL
- Professor Emeritus of Economics Kenneth A. Small is recognized as this year's UCI Lauds & Laurels Faculty Achievement honoree. Professor Small will be honored at the 2007 Lauds & Laurels Awards Ceremony on May 10, 2007 for his many accomplishments and achievements in the field of economics, and for his contributions to the university and surrounding community. PROFESSOR CHARLES LAVE SELECTED AS EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF UCTC ACCESS JOURNAL
- Charles Lave, emeritus professor of economics, has been selected to serve as editor-in-chief of "Access," the journal of the University of California Transportation Research Centers.
Lave, a professor at UC Irvine for the past 41 years, was co-writer of the grant application responsible for the creation of the UC Transportation Research Centers 19 years ago. To date, the Centers have brought in approximately $40 million dollars in outside funding from Federal and California agencies, and there are now branches at Berkeley, Irvine, and Los Angeles.
Lave's own research focuses on urban transportation problems: the public demand for automobiles verses transportation; the safety effects of speed limits; labor relations in the transit industry; privatization of public transit; part-time workers; and the comparative energy efficiency and environmental impact of transportation modes. He serves on expert study panels for the National Research Panel and the U.S. Congress.
PROFESSOR KRISTEN DAY AWARDED 2007-08 FELLOWSHIP BY THE AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EDUCATION
- The fellowship is part of a premier national program that helps develop future leaders in American higher education. Professor Day will be spending a year at an ACE-affiliated school, where she will be mentored by experienced administrators.
THE PLANNING, POLICY, AND DESIGN (PPD) DEPARTMENT EXCELS IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
- The Department of Planning, Policy and Design's urban planning graduate program was ranked 16th overall among more than 90 programs in the U.S. and Canada, and ranked fifth in the Western U.S. by Planetizen, a national urban planning and development network. For urban planning subspecialties, the program ranked second for public health and ninth for transportation planning.
L. ROBIN KELLER INCOMING EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF DECISION ANALYSIS
L. ROBIN KELLER TO BE AWARDED THE GEORGE E. KIMBALL MEDAL
- L. Robin Keller will be awarded the The George E. Kimball Medal at the upcoming INFORMS conference in Pittsburgh in November, for recognition of distinguished service to the Institute of Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and to the profession of operations research and the management sciences. The award is a medallion and a certificate.
