UCI ITE Student Chapter
2007/2008 Annual Project

"Signal Optimization Study for UCI Main Campus"

This year’s project is a Signal Timing and Phasing Optimization Study completed for UCI's Parking and Transportation Services Department. Meetings were held with department officials to discuss problem areas that are frequently seen at UCI and to determine a corridor that most required analysis. In February, Traffic counts were obtained by students using JAMAR counters for AM and PM Peak hours. Synchro and Simtraffic are currently being used to analyze the existing network. Phasing, timing, and coordination of the four signalized intersections in the system will be analyzed using several measures of effectiveness including delay, queue, and total stops. The anticipated signalization of an intersection will also be analyzed. Once results are obtained from our analysis, we expect to acquire permission from UCI to modify signalized intersections with assistance from a consultant (Iteris), and observe the effects of our recommendations. Project results were presented to the Southern California ITE section in May.
