Concurrent Masters Program in Civil Engineering and Planning
Concurrent MSCE/MURP Degree Program
The concurrent MSCE/MURP degree program allows students to simultaneously enroll in two
separate graduate programs to earn a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) from the
Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) and a Master in Urban and Regional
Planning (MURP) from the Department of Planning, Policy, and Design (PPD). This concurrent
degree program requires a minimum of 84 units and can be completed in two years, although the
normal time-to-degree is two to three years. Pursuing each degree separately requires three
to four years on average.
Program Admission
Students seeking admission to the concurrent MSCE/MURP degree must have a strong record of
coursework in disciplines related to civil engineering and urban planning. Applications to each
program require a separate application fee and admission decisions are made independently since
admission requirements vary between the two departments. The same application material can be
used by both programs. See program-specific admission information for
Civil and Environmental Engineering
and for Planning, Policy, and Design.
Program Requirements
The MSCE program requirements are the same as for a stand alone MSCE degree and must be satisfied
in full. The MURP program requirements reflect some overlap in core courses and are thus reduced
from those for the stand alone MURP degree. These revised requirements must be satisfied
independent of MSCE requirements.
Program Tracks
The concurrent MSCE/MURP degree program is organized around two tracks:
Program Options
Students enrolled in the concurrent MSCE/MURP degree program choose between a thesis option
and a comprehensive exam (All Course) option. The thesis option requires completing:
- 84 units of study (ten of which may be taken in conjunction with the thesis research);
- the completion of an original research project and the writing of a thesis to describe it;
- required core courses in each program; and
- enough units of approved electives to meet the minimum total requirement of 84 units
The comprehensive exam (All Course) option requires completing:
- 84 units of study;
- a capstone planning requirement (professional report; planning practicum; or comprehensive exam)
- required core courses in each program; and
- enough units of approved electives to meet the minimum total requirement of 84 units
Electives may include as many as eight units of independent studies or approved
undergraduate courses, but no redundancy is allowed for satisfying course requirements.
For more information about these requirements, see the program-specific requirements for
MSCE and
MURP programs.
